Resize and reposition new Finder windows automatically, thus getting around an annoying Finder bug that keeps it from remembering window size and position #Finder Window #Resize Window #Move Window #Finder #Window #Resize
For a long time now, Finder has had an annoying problem with remembering your preferred window size and location. Sometimes it refuses to stick to the last opened window’s specifications, requiring you to resort to some complicated workarounds to get new windows to behave normally.
FinderFix is a small app that aims to offer a solution to this issue. It can automatically resize and reposition every new Finder window as soon as it’s opened, while adding an unrelated function that allows you to cut and paste items in Finder using the ⌘X and ⌘V hotkeys, which normally only work on text.
The app runs in the menu bar, but you can set up a global shortcut for launching it and hide it from the menu bar as well. When accessing the preferences, you can set the default dimensions and position of every new Finder window. It would be nice if the app were able to capture these dimensions and coordinates from an active Finder window automatically, as it can be difficult to figure out the right numbers initially.
Once FinderFix is enabled, each new window will be moved to the specified position and resized. The process is barely noticeable when a window is moved. However, it can make disk image windows look a bit weird, since their backgrounds are normally designed around a specific window size.
Aside from its main functionality, the app can also make every new window open in a new Finder tab instead, which could be very helpful for some users’ workflows.
An even more useful feature makes the Cut function available for Finder items as well. When enabled, you can press ⌘X to cut, and ⌘V to paste a file/folder in a new location, just like on Windows, providing an alternative to the macOS ⌘C / ⌘⌥V.
While not perfect, since it doesn’t play well with disk image windows, FinderFix is an effective solution for Finder window sizing and positioning issues. It even has some additional features that could prove handy, and it’s available at no cost.
What's new in FinderFix 0.7.3 Beta:
- Change the Locale parsing algorithm to better identify language and region codes, making it flexible enough to distinguish between Portuguese (Portugal) and Portuguese (Brazil) and still robust enough for a fall-through when the operating system does not contain localizations for the specific region
- Fix .DS_Store removal still running after checkbox has been unticked
- Add optional system-wide removal of .DS_Store files in Home and Applications directories and subdirectories
- Add "Go to Folder" (Shift-Cmd-G) to the exclusion list
