Disk-O For Mac

Checking available disk space on macOS involves a few steps, so it may not be immediately obvious when you’re close to filling up your storage, especially if you download lots of files daily.

Disk-O is a very small and simple app that monitors your storage and displays your remaining free space in the menu bar. It’s lightweight and very easy to use and configure.

With this app running, you’ll always see how much free space you have remaining right in the menu bar. If you click the icon, you can see more info about the disk and its total capacity, as well as access the preferences.

By default, the app is updated every few seconds, but you can reduce it to once every ten or fifteen seconds, which should be more than enough. Resource usage is minimal, but a two-second update interval seems a bit too much.

First things first, display formats: you have a few options, such as displaying free space (with or without decimals), used and free space together, or the percentage of used and free space.

Secondly, the icon itself can be changed. There are a few to choose from, some that makes sense and others that are more humorous than anything else, such as a tortoise or a hare.

Disk-O may not be for everyone, but if you find yourself running out of disk space often, it will give you some advanced warning when it’s time to remove some apps or clear your Trash.

In particular, it’s useful if you download lots of things every day, which then need to be removed just as quickly. More than once I’ve found myself unable to download anything because my disk was full, and macOS somehow forgot to notify me. At least now you'll know where the problem is.
