CoreOS For Mac

CoreOS is a lightweight operating system based on the Linux kernel designed for large, scalable deployments on varied infrastructure.

The CoreOS Mac app is an open-source utility that acts as a wrapper around the corectl command-line tool, which helps you manage xhyve-based VMs. It is fairly easy to use and allows you to perform most operations from the menu bar.

The application already includes most of the necessary components, but it does need to perform some automatic downloads when first setting things up. These include the latest CoreOS image, which is required to run the VM, as well as the fleetctl and Docker OS X clients.

All files will be stored within the ‘core-osx’ directory created in the user’s home folder, and you will be asked to specify the desired size of the new VM.

Once everything has been set up, you will find the application’s icon in the status bar, and it provides some preset commands for performing various actions.

You can start, halt or reload the CoreOS VM, open the OS shell, as well as bring up Fleet-UI to view a list of running fleet units or launch DockerUI to show running Docker containers and other important information about them.
