Use Cmd+X and Cmd+V to cut and paste files and folders on macOS, a replacement for the standard Cmd+C and Cmd+Opt+V shortcuts normally used to move items. #Cut and Paste #Move File #Cut Shortcut #Cut #Paste #Move
Unlike on Windows and Linux, to cut and paste items in Finder, you need to copy them normally using Cmd+C, then use Cmd+Opt+V to move them to a different location. This isn’t as simple as using Cmd(Ctrl)+X to cut, and then Cmd(Ctrl)+V to paste, and it makes transitioning to macOS more difficult.
Command X is a very simple solution that makes cutting and pasting as straightforward as it is on Windows and Linux. All you have to do is press Cmd+X to cut, and then Cmd+V to paste the files or folders in another location.
Apple’s preferred cut and paste method has a couple of issues. It requires one extra modifier for pasting, and it puts the move action at the end of the sequence instead of the beginning.
Either due to habit or muscle memory, you’re likely to accidentally copy instead of move, as you may no longer be focused on the action after navigating to the new location.
With Command X, the process is objectively simpler, as Windows and Linux users will surely agree. When you decide you want to move a file or folder, just press Cmd+X to cut, and you’ll no longer have to remember to use a different shortcut to paste in the new location.
While it may take some getting used to if you’ve only ever used a macOS desktop, it makes moving items easier with virtually no drawbacks. And of course, if you’re transitioning from Windows or Linux, you’ll feel right at home.
Once installed, Command X runs in the menu bar, and it can be hidden from here as well. Just make sure to enable launch at login from the app’s settings, and you can pretty much forget about it. It handles everything in the background and will never bother you again.
If you do a lot of file management and need to move items in Finder, this app will make your work much more straightforward. It’s objectively better than Apple’s standard shortcut, and pretty much everyone can benefit from it.
