Backing up your files is always a good idea to prevent data loss in case of a hard drive failure or malware infection.
The Baccus macOS application has been created specifically to help you backup any local folder on your Mac, and effortlessly restore your files using Spotlight-like interface designed to help you rapidly pinpoint any backed up file you may need.
Once you start Baccus on your Mac, it will ask you to add an AFP, SMB, HFS+, FAT, or ACFS external drive or a NAS (short for network-attached storage) server as your backup destination volume.
Moreover, once you choose a backup volume, you can choose the folders you need to backup from your local hard drive via the Sources tab.
Baccus' Settings tab allows you to effortlessly schedule automatic backups and choose the minimum time between backups, from 1 hour to as many weeks as you want.
In the Settings tab, you can also set the time to keep changed and removed files and view detailed information about your backup volume.
Restoring your files can be done by searching for any file you need to be restored using the top left search field and by clicking on the "Restore" button. Once the button is clicked, you will be asked where you want to save the file.
Although the restoration feature worked flawlessly during the tests, it does come with its downsides. First of all, it does not display file previews; however, you can preview them using macOS’ Quicklook feature.
Secondly, it restores files on your Mac’s desktop by default, instead of using the file’s original path, even though it displays it in the Restore screen's status bar.
Despite looking quite polished, Baccus still has some bugs that need to be fixed. For instance, it will spam the system.log file with “Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 155: Refusing to execute/trust quarantined program/file: nz.co.factorial.BaccusHelper” errors.
Some extra features like support for online servers and cloud services backup, encrypted disk image backup, and backup presets (e.g. Keychain, Mail files, application preferences) would make Baccus even better at what it does.
In a nutshell, if you need a backup utility with support for automatic backup scheduling, NAS support, and simple configuration, Baccus could be the perfect tool for the job.
Moreover, Baccus is very user-friendly and, according to its website, it should also be faster than the macOS Time Machine.
