AutoMute is a minimalist but extremely useful OS X utility that can automatically manage your volume based on your current WiFi network. This way, you can make sure that you will never forget the sound on while at work or in class.

By default, AutoMute resides in the status bar, and you get to see the current volume status by extending the app’s menu.

You get to observe if you are connected to a WiFi network or not, if the volume is muted or unmuted, and when has the status changed. AutoMute can also show when you have disconnected from the WiFi network

The same menu offers you the possibility to launch the Preferences window where you get to quickly define the situations in which the volume should be muted or unmuted.

The AutoMute app automatically memorizes all the networks you have connected to and offers you the option to decide how the app should act in each case via the Preferences window.

AutoMute provides the network’s name and offers you to choose one of the supported actions via a minimalist drop down menu: mute, unmute, or do nothing.

AutoMute also enables you to decide what to do when you are not connected to any network. However, keep in mind that AutoMute cannot detect if you have manually muted or unmuted the volume.

AutoMute is extremely useful if you are a MacBook user and you carry your computer to school or work: you get to change the volume level depending on your WiFi connection.

Of course, you have to have your WiFi always turned on, and you need to configure the rules before actively using the app.

What's new in AutoMute 1.1:

  • El Capitan support (the toggles on the setup screen broke)
  • Added emojis to setup options for non-english speaking users
  • Added "Not connected to any network" option to the setup menu
  • Added a 10 second timer when wifi drops (to avoid detecting small drops in wifi)
