Older OS X versions featured a Single Window Mode that, when activated, would automatically minimize all apps that are not currently selected. The function remained hidden within the operating system, and can still be turned on via the command line.

However, the function might not be suitable in all cases, and typing the appropriate command in the Terminal and restarting your Dock for the changes to take effect each time you need to toggle the service is not precisely efficient or hustle free.

1AppMode is a small OS X utility that resides in the status bar and enables you to perform the change via its associated menu. The icon lets you know if the service is on or off, and you can modify the setting with a mouse click.

For your convenience, 1AppMode can add itself to the list of items launched automatically at login, but otherwise, the utility does not feature any customization options.

Working with 1AppMode is great because you get to clean up your desktop without any additional work: you will see only the windows associated with the currently active application and not worry about all others.

This is extremely useful whenever using your desktop for presentations since it helps you stay more organized. Nonetheless, if you need to work with multiple applications at the same time, deactivating the service is just as fast.

Bottom line, 1AppMode helps you take advantage of a function that is hidden within the operating system: you can choose to see only the windows for the active app.

Note that the 1AppMode function also works if you switch through apps by using the Command + Tab hotkey instead of using the Dock.
