With the official launch of the 10.7.5 version of OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has introduced the Gatekeeper application.

Basically, Gatekeeper is an anti-malware and security oriented OS X feature that enables you to restrict the sources from which applications can be installed on your Mac.

Despite the fact that the Gatekeeper app seems to offer the right balance between  freedom and imposed security with the help of its three restriction options (Mac App Store, Map App Store and identified developers, and Anywhere), some third party applications are automatically blocked by OS X.

Of course, there are many ways to get around this, with Terminal and arcane command tool trickery involved, but there’s an even simpler and faster way. With this specific issue in mind comes Quarantino, a simple and efficient OS X application that aims to provide an efficient way to remove you the restriction for certain unchecked-by-Apple apps.

Besides this, the software aims to provide you with comprehensive information regarding the downloaded app, so you can make the right call whether to, or not to install the app on your system.

In order to take advantage of what Quarantino has to offer, you must first launch the application, and drag the apps that is blocked onto its interface, or click the Open entry from the File menu. Once this is done, the utility quickly scan the app and displays the information in three main categories, namely App Publisher, App Security Entitlements, and Quarantine Properties.

If the app you have scanned is quarantined or blocked, the “App is in Security Quarantine” option will be checked, the “Remove From Quarantine” button will be active, and information regarding the type, agent, source, and download URL will be provided.

While we recommend a certain degree of caution because you can never be 100% sure that unsigned apps are as safe as they appear to be, Quarantino has proven to be a lightweight, yet useful application that offers you a higher degree of freedom when it comes to installing third party apps on your Mac.
