Do Not Disturb is a free and open source macOS application created with a single purpose in mind: to detect and notify you when unapproved physical access attempts to your laptop are detected.
It is essential to make sure that you know each time your MacBook or MacBook Pro is accessed while you are away because physical access is a significant vector for security attacks which can compromise your data.
To prevent these types of attacks, also known as "evil maid" attacks, Do Not Disturb monitors your laptop's lid continuously and will automatically issue an alert each time the lid is opened.
This means that you will receive a notification even if you are the one lifting the lid, with a notable mention: you can configure Do Not Disturb to not display an alert after successfully authenticating yourself using the Mac's Touch ID sensor.
The Do Not Disturb app features an unobtrusive user interface which can be accessed via your computer's status bar. The status bar menu is designed to both allow you to toggle the lid monitoring process on and off, and to quickly getting access to the utility's log and preferences.
On the Do Not Disturb's general preferences tab you are presented with the choice of enabling passive, no icon, and Touch Id modes, as well as disabling remote tasking via the iOS app and set it to launch on login automatically.
Do Not Disturb also makes it possible to choose either a binary or a script to be run when a "lid open" event is detected and to keep a close eye on any developments preceding the event (e.g., authentication events, newly launched processes, freshly mounted devices).
Do Not Disturb comes with remote notification abilities via the Do Not Disturb Companion iOS app developed by Digita Security. The iOS app is also capable of helping you perform remote actions such as taking pictures using the laptop's camera, shutting down the system, and dismissing alerts.
It's important to mention that, despite making Do Not Disturb a lot more helpful, the iOS companion app is not required. It will only make your life easier in the long run by allowing you to receive any "evil maid" attack notifications on your iPhone or iPad, and to respond to them appropriately.
The Do Not Disturb app coupled with its iOS sidekick can significantly improve your data's security by keeping a close eye on your MacBook's lid and automatically notifying you each time someone opens it while you are not around.
