Store your account credentials securely and type them into various websites or applications using a simple hotkey, with this open-source password manager. #Password Manager #Store Password #Manage Password #Password #Auto-Type #Credentials
Most users are familiar with password managers nowadays, whether you trust cloud-based software or prefer apps that only store data locally. If the latter is what you are looking for, you might have already tried KeePassX, a cross-platform port of the original KeePass Password Safe, which only ran on Windows.
KeePassXC is a fork of KeePassX. The project came about when it became clear that development of KeePassX had stalled, with many new features and bug fixes failing to make their way into the repository. It is a secure, cross-platform password manager that provides quick access to your credentials and can even type them automatically.
For a time, KeePassX was the only version of the software available for non-Windows users, which became an issue when the project stopped receiving updates. While the application is still perfectly functional, one cannot expect any new features to be added or bugs to be fixed.
KeePassXC is a community-driven fork of the cross-platform port, created as a way to continue development and ensure the application maintains the same security standards while also adding new features and fixing potential bugs.
As you are no doubt aware, there are quite a few cloud-based password managers you can choose from, but not all users are comfortable with having sensitive information stored on a company’s servers, even if it is encrypted. KeePassXC, however, saves everything only in a local database, which can be encrypted using the AES, Twofish or ChaCha20 algorithms and a 256-bit key.
To unlock your database and access your account credentials, you can use a single master password, which is the only one you will have to remember in the future. If you want an additional layer of security, you can use a key file as well.
While neither your database or any other type of data is stored outside of your Mac, you can still place the database on a cloud storage drive if you wish to synchronize your passwords across multiple devices.
Once it is no longer necessary to remember every password you use, it is possible to secure your accounts with much more complex passkeys that are difficult, if not impossible to crack. To this end, you can rely on the built-in generator to create random passwords and passphrases.
Of course, we cannot end without mentioning the app’s auto-typing feature. It allows the application to type a set of credentials into any form, whether on your desktop or in a browser, with just a couple of clicks or a hotkey. You can even set up a global shortcut to trigger the function from any window and then select the credentials you wish to enter.
In short, if you need a feature-packed password manager that only stores your data locally, KeePassXC is one of the best, if not the best option available. It is quite versatile, providing you with everything you need to organize your credentials and keep them safe, and it lets you decide exactly how and where your information is stored.
