Encrypt and decrypt your files by using this minimalist application that works with a user defined master key and reduces everything to drag and drop actions. #Encrypt file #Decrypt file #Protect file #Encrypt #Decrypt #Protect
Encrypting files that hold important information is a good practice, but you must also make sure that you will still be able to access the information.
Crypter is a minimalist app that employs the same user-defined master key for all encrypted files, which makes it a lot harder to forget.
Upon launch, the Crypter welcome panel will take you through the steps of setting a master phrase for the application. Note that your passkey must follow certain security protocols: must contain at least one letter of the alphabet, one number, one symbol, and at least eight characters.
You will need to provide this passphrase every time you launch the Crypter application in order to access its interface. Note that the app does not use the master key when encrypting, but a derivation obtained by using the PBKDF2 algorithm.
Worth mentioning is that, if you forget the master passkey, there is no option to recover it. As a result, all files encrypted until that point will remain locked.
The Crypter user interface is resumed to a single panel on top of which you must drop the files you want to process. Keep in mind that you need to drop the files only in the bottom area of the panel: otherwise, the app will try to open the respective files.
Crypter will start the job almost instantly and quickly displays the generated initialization vector, the authentication tag, the salt for the key derivation, and the encryption key.
However, to decrypt the newly produced .crypto files, all you have to do is drop them on top of the Crypter main window again. Worth mentioning is that Crypter does not tamper with the original files, and modifies the file name to help you identify the decrypted version.
Even through the Crypter approach is quite minimalist, the under the hood elements ensure that your files are encrypted using a secure algorithm.
The user interaction is reduced to merely setting a master passkey that Crypter will use to generate keys for the encrypted files.
