Quickly measure your internet connection speed, latency, and responsiveness, with a tiny desktop app that integrates with Shortcuts #Speed Test #Network Test #Network Speed #Speed #Network #Internet
Depending on various factors, your connection speed can vary wildly, especially if your provider doesn't do a good job of maintaining their infrastructure. Issues with websites and even apps can be caused by a poor connection, so it helps to have a quick way to test it.
Speediness is exactly what you need for such a scenario. It's a small, native macOS app that tests your network speed in about 20 seconds, while also providing details about your ping and connection's responsiveness.
As soon as you launch the app, it will start the network test. It should take about 20 seconds if tests are run in parallel, and 35 seconds if they are run sequentially. The former method is meant to simulate real-world conditions, but you can change this setting from the app's preferences.
Once it's done, you will be able to see your average download and upload speed in the main window, along with your ping and number of round-trips per minute (RPM). The latter indicates how responsive your network is.
Ookla's Speedtest is generally the preferred service for network benchmarks, but it may not be as realistic as you expect. Since it polls a nearby server, the results you get are unlikely to reflect real-world conditions, particularly when it comes to latency.
Speediness uses the networkQuality command-line tool added by Apple to macOS Monterey. This utility is designed for troubleshooting, and it runs tests in a manner that simulates actual usage scenarios. It also calculates the number of round-trips per minute, which is a metric not normally used by other testing tools.
Overall, this is a pretty simple app, acting as a GUI for Apple's networkQuality tool. That doesn't make it any less useful, however, as the results it provides may prove to be more reliable and accurate than what you get from most other speed testing apps.
What's new in Speediness 1.7.1:
- Fix Wi-Fi name not showing up in history. If you're still not seeing the Wi-Fi name, go to “System Settings => Privacy & Security => Location Services”, and enable it for Speediness.
