There are lots of network traffic monitors available for all platforms, but they don’t tend to be very beginner-friendly. Many users will try them and then give up as soon as they can’t figure something out.

Sniffnet is a great tool to start out with, and it can be followed by a more complex program if it doesn’t have all the features you need. It comes with an intuitive user interface and allows you to start monitoring an adapter in just a few seconds.

While it’s not going to compare to something like WireShark in terms of complexity, Sniffnet is a lot easier to get started with. You just need to select an adapter and you can begin monitoring. Some filters will help reduce the amount of unnecessary data, but those are easy to add as well.

Traffic can be filtered by IP version, transport protocol, and application protocol. If you’re looking for something in particular, this is how you can ignore packets that are of no interest to you.

Once you’ve started monitoring, the data will be plotted in a real-time graph, which can show either the number of packets or bytes per second, with incoming and outgoing data displayed separately.

On the right, you can see any active filters, the number of filtered packets, and filtered packets by app protocol.

Finally, all filtered packets are listed at the bottom of the UI, with the source and destination IP address, port, layer, number of packets and total size. A full report can be opened in a text file for further analysis and processing.

Again, Sniffnet doesn’t offer anything close to the number of features found in more complex traffic monitors, but it’s intended for users who don’t need that level of intricacy. It’s simple to use and does the job, and it’s particularly suitable for those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy.
