You sometimes come across macOS apps that could easily pass for Apple software, and Darkroom is one of them. It’s a photo and video editor that integrates seamlessly with Apple’s ecosystem and looks just like a built-in macOS app, providing you with a quick way to fine-tune your photos and videos on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
Originally a mobile-only app, Darkroom has recently been ported to macOS as well, and the results are impressive. Easy to use, fast, and versatile, it’s a great tool for any user who needs to make swift modifications from any Apple device.
Following Apple’s philosophy of simplicity, the app accesses your photo library and lets you access any media file instantly. No need to import anything. Images and videos will be opened in the main view, with other files visible on the left, for quick access.
All your editing tools are available on the right, with some file management options on top. The UI is incredibly intuitive and looks pretty much the same on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, so you can easily switch between them.
Darkroom supports photos and videos, and the workflow is identical for both types of media. You can crop and straighten, apply filters, adjust colors and curves, add frames, and more.
Advanced modifications can be made using masks, and the app uses detection algorithms to differentiate between foreground subjects and the background, so that you can edit only certain parts of the photo.
Since Darkroom accesses your iCloud photo library directly, you can grab any media file from your Mac or mobile device, and the modified version will be instantly available on all your other devices. This makes it great for working on the go, as you will always have access to the same files, interface, and editing tools regardless of what you’re using.
Just like most of Apple’s software, Darkroom is perfect for both professionals and enthusiasts who need to edit and adjust their media files quickly and effortlessly. One downside is the subscription required to process videos and access some advanced photo editing tools, but the free version is quite powerful on its own.
