ICAT is a database (with supporting software) that provides an interface to Large Facility experimental data and will provide a mechanism to link all aspects of the research chain from proposal through to publication.
ICAT is in use or development at several large facilities.
ICAT has being developed as a collaboration between STFC ISIS Facility, STFC eScience, Diamond Light Source and the ILL.
The storage, retrieval and management of data is a major concern for all large scale facilities. For example, ISIS currently produces ~1TB of neutron and muon data each year and with the introduction of Target Station II, this rate of data collection is set to rise still further.
The ILL has a nearly 40 years of data which is made available via ICAT. New facilities such as Diamond produce many TB of data and millions of files per year. The full value of these data resources will only be realized if they are easily searchable, accessible and reusable.
Detailed instructions on how to install and use ICAT utility on your Mac are available HERE.
