GPS log files are used to store spatial information such as waypoints, tracks and routes. They use various data formats to save this information, and they normally require specialized software to be viewed, analyzed or modified.
GPXSee is a cross-platform, open-source application designed to help users open and process GPS log files created by various devices or software. It takes a simplistic approach, providing you with a fairly basic, no-nonsense tool that lets you view GPX and other files while lacking the features of complex GIS software.
Not having to switch between multiple apps to work with different files is certainly a plus, and GPXSee can make your life easier since it can open GPX, KML, TCX, FIT, IGC, NMEA, SLF, LOC and OziExplorer files. To top it off, you can even load multiple files at once and switch between them seamlessly.
What’s more, the application can display multiple types of online maps to help you visualize the data contained in the log file. If you prefer, you can even load your own local maps if you are not happy with the options at your disposal.
Once you’ve opened a file, the application will display the routes, tracks and waypoints on the map you have selected. You can zoom in or out, pan and even hide certain items such as waypoint labels or route waypoints.
Below the map, you can view a graph that indicates elevation, speed, heart rate, cadence, temperature, power and gear ratio or shifts. If you click on certain points on the graph, you can view the exact values at a specific elevation, distance and so on.
While clearly not the most complex application of its kind, GPXSee is probably exactly what many users need. It enables you to analyze GPS log files without overwhelming you with advanced features that you might not be interested in, and the straightforward UI layout certainly helps new users get the hang of things.
Overall, GPXSee is definitely worth a try if you a looking for a lightweight application capable of opening GPS log files and performing a basic analysis. It is remarkably easy to use, and it still comes equipped with enough features to cover the needs of all but the most demanding users.
