View information about earthquakes around the globe obtained from the GEOFON Program of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, with this Java-based application. #Earthquake Information #Earthquake Alert #Earthquake Monitor #Earthquake #GFZ #Seismology
The GEOFON Program of the GFZ Potsdam Research Center for Geosciences was created to provide quick earthquake information from around the world using an extensive network of seismic stations.
The service can be accessed using a web form, but an open-source desktop application is also available – Earthquake Bulletin. It makes it a lot easier to browse the collected data, while also supporting continuous monitoring of a certain area.
To perform a search, you will need to specify the period and provide the coordinates. To make the latter task easier, you can select the area of the globe you are interested in by simply opening the map and zooming in to a certain region.
You can also set the minimum magnitude and limit the results to a specific number of events. It is worth noting that, by default, the application shows only 40 results. To get the info you need, either increase the limit or make the parameters more specific.
Once you have found an earthquake that you are interested in, you can double-click the event to view a map of its location. You can also pinpoint the epicenter in OpenStreetMap or view its location using Google Maps, in your browser.
More detailed information is available on the GEOFON Program’s website for each event. For instance, you can access GEOFON waveform recordings and the moment tensor solution. The link to these details can be viewed by right-clicking an event.
Once you’ve set up the search criteria, you can have the application refresh the results regularly. The minimum interval is 1 minute. What’s more, it is possible to configure a set of default criteria that will always be used when starting the application.
Earthquake Bulletin is a great app for users who need a quick way to access information about seismic events available through the GFZ GEOFON Program. It is more accessible than the web form, and it comes with some useful features that make it easier to find what you need and monitor certain regions.
