Pretty much any VPN worth using requires payment, and it usually comes in the form of a monthly or yearly subscription. But what if you hardly ever use it, and it feels like you’re overpaying for the service you get?

UpVPN may be the solution, a VPN that only charges you for however much you use the service. It features a serverless architecture, with servers created on public cloud providers when a connection is established.

In terms of pricing, you have to buy a certain amount of credit, which will then be spent while using the VPN. You are charged based on use time and data transferred, and there is a helpful pricing calculator available. For infrequent use, it should be cost effective, but for daily, extended use, it won’t be the best solution.

UpVPN has a limited number of locations available at present, and the desktop app is still somewhat rudimentary, but it is an early release. When you launch a VPN session, a Linux-based WireGuard server is set up on cloud storage, and it remains active for as long as you use the server. When you disconnect, the server is shut down.

The company claims your traffic tracked or logged, and all records related to a session are deleted from the database when a VPN session is ended.
