Usenet is one of the largest online communication systems and in order to browse and post to it, you must have a client program installed on your Mac.
Unison is a free and all-in-one Usenet browser and newsreader designed to enable users to participate in forum discussions, to post their own files on-line, or to search and download images, music, or videos.
Right off the bat, you must configure the access to at least one Usenet server in order to use any of Unison’s features. To configure a new server, you must open the Unison Preferences window, navigate to the “Servers” tab, and input the server address, port, required credentials, and more. To help you get started, Unison offers you the possibility to find newsgroups by browsing the categories included in the Directory folder, or the hierarchical names list. Lastly, you can make use of the built-in search tool to find a specific newsgroup.
Unison enables users to post messages to a newsgroup by replying to an existing message, or by creating a new message. It is also possible to post messages to multiple newsgroups at once: simply input the newsgroups names and use commas to separate them.
Moreover, one has the option of attaching music or image files to their messages by directly dragging and dropping them into the window where they compose the actual message.
Unison offers its users the possibility to upload or download files to and from the server and, once started, a progress status bar will appear in the transfers section of the source list.
On the whole, Unison is a handy OS X application that offers all conventional newsreader features, but also comes with a user-orientated interface that enables you to preview, upload and download files, as well as compose or read messages with little to no effort.
