Choose which browser or email client to use when opening links, and even create specific rules to automate the process and avoid prompts entirely #Browser Selector #Select Browser #Mail Client Selector #Browser #Mail #Selector
With so many browsers to choose from, you may not be able to find one that does everything right. Some are better than others at specific tasks, but you can only have one default browser, so it's a hassle to copy and paste links in the particular browser you want to open them with.
Switchbar takes care of that for you. It allows you to specify which types of links should be opened in each browser or email client, and if rules aren't defined, it will give you a prompt to ask you which app should be used. It even supports browser profiles and comes with extensions for easily transferring pages from one browser to another. Of course, it only affects links clicked outside of a browser.
Assuming no rules have been configured, or the link you have clicked doesn't match any of them, Switchbar will display a prompt on your screen. From it, you can choose the app you want the link to be opened in, either by clicking it or using a hotkey. Rules can be created automatically based on this selection.
From the app's preferences, you can also change the order of your browsers and mail clients in the selection prompt. Installed browsers and clients are detected automatically whenever you run the application.
If you deal with certain types of links often, you might want to create rules so that they are opened in the right browser or mail client automatically. Links are identified based on the contents of the hostname, URL, or email. If a match is found, it will be opened in the specified browser when clicked.
The app also supports profiles in Chromium-based browsers. When setting up a rule, you can specify which profile should be used when opening a certain link.
If you need to take a web page from one browser to another, you can install the Open with Switchbar extensions. All popular web browsers are supported, including Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.
Switchbar works great, and it is particularly helpful if you need to use separate browsers for work and personal stuff, which is quite common now that so many of us are working from home. Keep in mind, though, the free version only supports up to two rules, so you'll need to use the browser selector for most links. However, the Plus upgrade is reasonably priced, so it might be worth getting.
