SmartApp For Mac

SmartApp is a minimalist OS X utility designed to help you keep track of your traffic usage whenever you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. The app will display the daily usage in the status bar, but you get more detailed statistical information within the associated panel.

To be able to use the SmartApp utility you need to make sure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. SmartApp will display the hotspot name in its main panel, and you get to see how much traffic you have routed through the network.

At the same time, you get to see your daily usage on all networks, and how much traffic you have been using since the utility started recording. Note that you get to reset the data at any time via the Settings menu.

However, during our tests, we have noticed that the SmartApp does not stop recording the traffic usage if you disable the Wi-Fi connection and continue accessing the internet via Ethernet.

As a result, if you use both Wi-Fi hotspots and a cable connection, the statistics will not be very accurate. To bypass the issue, you can disable the Ethernet connection and clear the tracking info before connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Within the SmartApp status bar panel, under the Applications tab, you also get to see the internet usage for each utility. SmartApp will display the app name together with the traffic details. The same area provides info about the system’s network usage.

This way, you can easily assess which of your installed utilities are resources hoggers and take the necessary precaution whenever you must make due with a limited about of traffic.

To conclude, SmartApp is a great tool to have around if you are on a Wi-Fi connection and need to be careful with your traffic usage. The app can work with multiple hotspots, but it does not seem to cope well if you also employ a cable connection.
