If you only use one browser for everything, including work and personal browsing, you’re going to have to switch between multiple sessions, with their own websites, depending on what you’re doing.

SessionRestore lets you create tab and window arrangements that you can switch between with one click. These can be saved and managed directly from Safari via an integrated extension, with more configuration options available in the standalone app.

Once the app has been installed and the extension activated, you can start browsing normally. When you have a certain tab and window layout that you would like to use again later, just save it via the extension’s icon in Safari. You can rename it for easier identification.

You can save any number of such layouts, and then switch to them from the extension’s drop-down menu. When one is selected, all currently open tabs will be closed and replaced by those in the saved session.

While most things can be done directly from Safari, you need to switch to the standalone app for some features. Here, you have a full list of all your saved sessions, and you can click them to get further details.

You can see all the tabs and windows that make up a session, move them around, remove them, or even add new ones. You can use drag and drop to move tabs, switch the order of sessions, or add tabs to other layouts.

Since grouping tabs became available in Safari, apps like SessionRestore have lost some of their value, but they can still be very useful in the right hands. It offers a lot more management features than what you get from Apple’s minimalistic implementation, making it superior in the hands of power users.

Of course, that means it isn’t for everyone, as most casual users will probably find Apple’s offering to be sufficient. Nevertheless, you can give SessionRestore a try to see if it’s a big enough improvement.
