Popular search engines work for day to day activities, but will not be very efficient if you are looking for scholar articles or academic papers to backup your research projects.

Reference Miner is a powerful search tool that will retrieve results from PubMed, Google Scholar, JSTOR, the Library of Congress or Amazon.

Take into account that you need access privileges to the JSTOR database. At the same time, Reference Miner supports only certain Amazon websites: UK, US, Japan, Canada, France, Italy, China and Germany.

Reference Miner comes with a minimalist interface and its main window is separated in two areas by a horizontal bar: on top you can view the search results while on bottom you can read the article’s content.

The items in the results list can be viewed as a continuous record or you can have the available information organized into multiple columns. You can read the article’s content due to the built in web browser that is compatible with EZProxy.

From the top Reference Miner toolbar, you can select the database you want to use and then input the search subject. The same area provides access to the Advanced Search panel where you can add up to 10 different text filters and enables additional limitations (for example, you can exclude the entries that do not provide the full text).

Reference Miner can also be used to download webpages or PDFs via drag and drop actions, as long as you have the necessary credentials. If you are browsing on Amazon you can also view the book covers and email citations or the tagged content.

All things considered, Reference Miner is a great tool if you are looking to create a references list for different types of projects and helps you find relevant academic data without having to deal with irelevant results.
