OpenVisualTraceroute is a network analysis tool that offers you the possibility to use two very familiar commands, Traceroute and Whois, via a friendly graphical user interface.
The OpenVisualTraceroute utility comes with 2D or 3D representations of the Globe that can be easily be zoomed in or out, can point out the location of each server on the map, performs latency measurements, and so on.
Within the OpenVisualTraceroute main window, you can easily use the Traceroute function to see the route to a specified IP address or hostname and measure the packet’s delay in each point.
The OpenVisualTraceroute utility provides all the technical details for the servers, such as the IP address, hostname, location, DNS, distance to the previous node, or latency value. However, the app also provides graphical representations to go with the data.
As a result, the OpenVisualTraceroute main window is dominated by a graphical representation of the Earth: the utility automatically highlights the location of each server and traces the path between them by using different colors.
OpenVisualTraceroute allows you to center the map or pan to different regions. At the same time, you get to choose between the 3D and 2D viewing mode, depending on how many resources you have available, or if your Mac can handle OpenGL or not.
Besides the Traceroute function, OpenVisualTraceroute also includes a Whois tool that can help you learn more about a specific domain, including the hosting location. The best part is that the data can be accessed with ease by anyone, without having to manually type commands in the Terminal.
To sum up, OpenVisualTraceroute provides easy access to well-known network analysis tools, but also helps you visualize the data by automatically generating a graphical representation of the connection route.
The information offered by the OpenVisualTraceroute app can be shared with others by using image files, the clipboard, or CSV files. Note that OpenVisualTraceroute will also graph the latency level between locations.
