Ping is an app with a simple name but a few tricks up its sleeve. It’s an uptime monitor particularly suitable for webmasters, dev ops, or consultants, but it’s just as useful for anyone who needs to track the status of a website, API, or endpoint.

You start by adding all the URLs you wish to monitor. Provide the link, type a name, and select the preferred method for checking their status. You can also set the timeout threshold and allow insecure SSL.

Multiple sites can be added (up to three in the free version), and they will be checked automatically at any interval you set from the app’s settings. Alternatively, you can remove any of them from the automatic check and only ping them manually. They can be marked as up, slow, or down.

You can close the main app window and get all the data you need directly from the menu bar. Clicking the icon will list all of your sites, their current status, and their response times. If they are down or slow, they will be marked as such.

Notifications can also be delivered whenever a website becomes unresponsive. You can customize these from macOS as you would for any other app. The icon and details displayed in the menu can also be personalized.

Ping really is a great tool. You can set it up in no time at all, and it gives you all the information you want in a clear and intuitive manner. If you don’t need to track more than three websites at a time, you don’t even need to pay for the Pro upgrade, as the free version has all the features you need.
