Many of our favorite apps and services are only available online, with fewer developers choosing to create standalone desktop apps for their products. This can render some services less accessible, and it can make organizing them a real pain.
MenubarX is a clever way to get some apps and websites out of your browser and move them to the menu bar. A full-fledged browser housed in the menu bar, this app supports multiple tabs as separate icons, user agent customization, and more.
Whether it's an app you need at all times or a website with information that you need for your work, MenubarX allows you to add them as menu bar items, essentially turning them into a sort of dedicated macOS app. Of course, it's still a browser, but web pages are more easily accessible in this fashion.
For each web page you want to add, a new tab can be created. These tabs appear as separate items in the menu bar, complete with the website's icon. Each tab has individual settings for window size, user agent, and auto-refresh.
As I've mentioned, you can choose from multiple window sizes, which simulate various devices. The largest is 1024x768, which automatically changes the user agent to macOS Safari. You can, of course, switch between macOS and iOS Safari at any time.
The app also comes with an auto-refresh feature, which can be quite useful when you need to monitor a website for changes or ensure you are always seeing the latest content.
MenubarX could have many uses, but it's up to you to figure out if it's suitable for your needs. While it's great for quickly accessing a web service, there is no option to keep a tab active when you click away from it, which kind of makes it useless for watching videos or keeping some info on screen while working on something else.
Of course, there are plenty of other things you could use it for, and the fact that websites are easily recognizable in the menu bar makes it great for pages that you need to check regularly and would prefer not to use a classic browser for.
