MegaBackup aims to deliver a backup solution for your files and folders without limiting the storage space you have available. The service relies on Amazon S3 services and features monthly subscription plans.
Right off the bat, MegaBackup prompts you for your service credentials: you get to register free of charge, but the account comes with a 10GB storage limit. If you want to get unlimited storage space, you need to get one of the available subscription plans.
MegaBackup will send your files to Amazon S3 server while also protecting the content by using the AES 256-bit encryption algorithm.
Worth mentioning is that MegaBackup does not integrate any management capabilities: to see details about your backups or shared files, you need to go through a web browser.
Within the MegaBackup main window, you get to decide which files stored on your Mac are to be uploaded to the cloud. By default, MegaBackup can backup the content of your Photos, Documents, Music, Desktop, and Downloads folders.
You can manually point out items stored in any other directory: the files will be loaded in the Other category.
However, you may also navigate to the MegaBackup Sync folder and simply drag and drop the items you want to upload. The utility will automatically process them, and you can see the respective files and folders under the Sync Folder tab within the MegaBackup web app.
Moreover, MegaBackup integrates sharing capabilities, and can either handle individual files or help you capture desktop screenshots and automatically place the link to the image on your clipboard.
The MegaBackup configuration panel does not allow you to see the list of files that are to be uploaded to the cloud and lacks the option to set new default locations that are to be scanned when starting a new backup process.
At the same time, you don’t get to browse your files or transfer them back to your Mac within the desktop app: you will be automatically sent to your default web browser, which means that you are relying on the browser’s download capabilities.
Bottom line, even through MegaBackup aims to integrate into your workflow, the utility proves to be confusing to use as far as the backup configuration is concerned, while the download and file management capabilities are missing altogether.
