Block cookie consent pop-ups on most websites, which will normally prevent non-essential cookies from being used and will save you a lot of effort in the process. #Cookie Blocker #Cookie Pop-up #Safari Extension #Cookie #Blocker #GDPR
In order to comply with EU GDPR requirements, websites must inform users of the cookies they use and give them the option to select which cookies should be activated. This means that when you visit a website for the first time, you’ll have to navigate a consent form and submit your preferences.
Hush is a Safari extension that aims to make your browsing experience more streamlined by blocking these cookie pop-ups altogether. Since non-essential cookies are not allowed to be used without the user’s consent, this should be a good enough solution privacy-wise.
It’s worth noting that this extension doesn’t interact with cookie pop-ups in any way, so it will not select any options before closing them. They are simply blocked from appearing altogether. According to GDPR laws, websites are not allowed to enable non-essential cookies without the user’s explicit consent, so this should ideally result in only essential cookies being used.
Of course, this isn’t a perfect solution. Some websites might still have some non-essential cookies enabled by default, even if this goes against EU regulations. A more advanced method would be to automatically select cookie preferences to maximize privacy, similar to what the DuckDuckGo browser does, but that would make the extension a lot more complex.
After trying it out, it seems Hush is able to block cookie pop-ups on many websites, but a lot of popular sites are not covered. For example, on Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, BBC, and Bing, the consent form was still displayed.
This may simply be a temporary issue, but these are some quite noticeable oversights. It doesn’t help that reporting a website requires you to open a Google Docs form and submit the URL and issues manually. An in-browser reporting tool would make things a lot easier.
In short, Hush could be a great extension for EU Safari users, but it seems to lack coverage for a few of the most popular websites at present. It worked well on most other sites that were tested, but there are clearly still a few issues to be worked out.
