It is becoming more and more difficult to ensure your privacy and security on the Internet, as various websites and services often extract user information for themselves or other interested parties, the end goal usually being financial profit.
Iridium was designed specifically to combat these threats. It is based on the popular Chromium architecture but makes several alterations to enhance your privacy while browsing the web.
While Google Chrome is certainly well-known, it is not the only application to use the Chromium code base, as new projects are constantly popping up with the aim of improving the popular browser in various ways.
The interface and functionality usually do not suffer too many modifications, and this is the case with Iridium as well. The upside is that it should be instantly recognizable to anyone who has used Google Chrome or other similar browsers before, and it is possible to make the transition to Iridium very quickly.
Most importantly, Iridium inhibits the automatic transmission of partial queries, metrics and keywords to central services, as these actions can only occur with the user’s consent.
If we were to go into more detail, however, we could mention the fact that the usage of system-provided plugins such as Java and Flash is disabled, as well as several Google services, background mode, EV certificates, network/DNS prediction and link auditing, just to mention a few.
Also, Google Safe Browsing is enabled by default, some more search providers are included, and numerous optional settings are activated, in an effort to guarantee complete privacy.
Iridium is designed for users who do not want to take any risks when browsing the web, and the fact that it’s source code is available to anyone ensures that modifications made to the code base can be monitored.
If you are looking for an alternative to Google Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers, Iridium is easy to get used to, but its simple design should make it accessible to all other users as well.
