Hacker News is a news website based on user submissions and comes with a code that encourages posters to share anything that qualifies as intellectually stimulating. The platform features a voting system and allows readers to express their opinions on the links.
The HackerNews utility offers you the possibility to access the website in a standalone application that keeps everything both organized and easily accessible, so you won’t waste time switching between tabs and cluttering your web browser.
Within the HackerNews main window, you get to see the list of stories included in a particular collection, view the currently selected article, and the associated comments. You also have the option to see only the article or only the comments.
You can switch between top or new stories, go to the Ask HN or Show HN categories, view the highest voted recent links, most active discussions, and so on. Note that the articles list does not update automatically, but you can refresh manually anytime you like.
Worth mentioning is that HackerNews comes with a collection of keyboard shortcuts that can help you deal with some of these tasks more efficiently. Just press the h key to see all the available hotkeys (you do not get to customize them).
HackerNews offers you the possibility to send article links to your browser, copy the link to the clipboard, or directly Google the story within the built-in browser.
If the article is hard to read you can improve the experience by using the Readability tool, and the app can look for a cached version in case the website is down.
Nonetheless, if you want to post new links or express your opinion on any subject, you will be directed to your default web browser where you must log into your Hacker News account beforehand.
HackerNews proposes an alternative solution for reading articles and viewing links posted on the Hacker News social news platform, and see what other users have to say about the subject in the same swoop.
The HackerNews app comes with a Readability tool designed to make the links more easy to read, can open PDF documents within a built-in PDF reader, can remember read stories, and helps you navigate the posts with the help of keyboard shortcuts.
