Hacker Menu is a handy macOS app that can provide you with the top stories from the Hacker News website, so that you can stay up-to-date without having to check for new content constantly.

It can display important details about each entry, such as the article’s title, source, poster, votes and comments. However, to read the stories, vote or leave your own comments, you need to open the article in your browser.

Once Hacker Menu has been installed, it can be accessed from the menu bar. The interface is split into three tabs that let you browse the Top, Show and Ask sections of the Hacker News website.

The top 20 stories are shown from each category but, unfortunately, you cannot customize this number. The app displays each item's title, source website, age and poster, as well as the number of votes and comments.

Unread stories are highlighted, to help you keep track of which links you have already visited. You can access the comment section directly, to vote or leave your own thoughts on the website.

When a story has been posted in any of the categories, the application’s menu bar icon changes, letting you know that there is new content available.

The app window can be resized, depending on how many items you wish to see at any one time. Sadly, though, it is hidden as soon as you switch to another window, and there is no option to have it remain on top at all times.

It would also help if more color variations were available, specifically a dark mode that would blend with the alternative macOS menu bar and Dock color scheme.
