Developed by Google to help you upload image and video content to your online account, the Google Photos Backup application can detect images stored on your mobile device, and should also be able to monitor different folders located on your Mac.

To start using the Google Photos Backup, you must login to your Google account and specify which folders and devices should be backed up in the cloud. The application will upload only the image and video files that use one of the supported formats.

Noteworthy is that, when you connect a mobile device or a removable drive to your Mac, Google Photos Backup prompts you if you want to automatically have the contents of this device backed up to the cloud or not.

Unfortunately, the rule does not apply to the local folders, and there is no way in which you can tell the application that you want those sources monitored.

As a result, during our test, we have noticed that Google Photos Backup does not detect the changes in local backup sources and does not automatically upload newly added image files to the cloud.

However, the automatic backup worked flawlessly when dealing with removable media storage units.

Within the Google Photos Backup Preferences window you can choose to upload the images at full resolution, or to switch to high-quality mode which means that the file’s size will be optimized. Nonetheless, you can also choose to upload RAW images.

If you want to visualize the images uploaded to the cloud, you must open your Google Photos account in a web browser of your choice. To streamline the process, Google Photos Backup provides quick links to the respective URLs in the menu bar.

To conclude, Google Photos Backup offers you the possibility to quickly upload image and video files to your Google Photos account, but keep in mind that the automatic backup function does not work for the local media sources.
