Sharing videos by using the YouTube platform is a very popular practice, but online streaming can be rather frustrating if you have a slow internet connection. Get Tube is a small Mac OS X app that enables you to download the videos and playback the media any time you like, directly from your computer.

Moreover, Get Tube can be used as a desktop client for the YouTube website in order to eliminate any potential clutter in your web browser. This way, you can keep your work and leisure related activities separated.

Get Tube comes with very basic web browsing functions: the main window comes with an address bar and you can view the content right below. The top toolbar contains go back and forward buttons, and allows you to access the Download window.

The app does not allows you to open multiple tabs or windows, but you get to login to your YouTube account and browse your own subscriptions.

To use the Get Tube download function you must navigate to a YouTube page (the app does not work on pages that contain lists of videos) and then press the “Download” button placed in the top right corner of the main window.

The first time when you use the feature you will be directed to the Preferences window where you must specify the output folder, and decide if you want to add the downloaded media to your iTunes library. Via the Get Tube Download window you can decide if you want to extract the full video, or only the audio track.

Get Tube is a great utility to have around if you want to access the YouTube website without using a full featured web browser. At the same time, you can use it to download the audio or video content to your Mac: this is extremely useful if you have a poor internet connection.
