Most web browsers come with a built-in download manager that is limited to a single connection per transfer, which might prove problematic when dealing with large archives.
Free Download Manager is yet another download manager and accelerator that aims to help you deal with large transfers without having to wait for a long time.
When you launch Free Download Manager for the first time, you are prompted to confirm if you want the app to monitor your Safari or Google Chrome downloads.
Both functions can be activated or deactivated at a later time via the Free Download Manager Preferences, and both require installing a companion extension within the browser.
Free Download Manager also includes an option to activate monitoring for Firefox, but you must restart the browser and confirm the installation for the Free Download Manager companion extension. During our tests, we have noticed that not all download links are detected by the Free Download Manager extensions.
Free Download Manager is able to deal with the HTTP and FTP protocols, but can also handle BitTorrent files: just input the URL and the app will know what to do.
At the same time, if Free Download Manager detects a YouTube link, it will extract the video name and thumbnail, and allows you to select the output quality.
To increase the download speed, Free Download Manager can establish multiple connections, but you can ensure that this will not affect your browsing experience by setting up traffic limits.
Within the Free Download Manager Preferences window, you get to set the low, medium, and high download and upload speeds, but also the maximum number of connections and running downloads.
Free Download Manager packs quite efficient tools in a clean and well-organized user interface that should not raise issues even to inexperienced users.
The app can handle popular transfer protocols, increases the download speed by establishing multiple connections, and ensures that it will not interfere with your workflow by setting in place traffic limitations.
