Like most web browsers out there, the Google Chrome application comes with a built-in download manager that will open in a new tab. The approach can be considered counter-intuitive and time-consuming by some users.

Download Plus is a Chrome extension that enables you to monitor and interact with the transfers via a small panel attached to the address bar.

To install the Download Plus extension, you need to navigate to the appropriate entry in the Chrome Store and press the “Add to Chrome” button present on the page. The extension’s icon will be automatically placed next to the address bar, and you can activate its panel with a simple mouse click.

What’s more, Download Plus also includes support for using a hotkey to toggle the panel’s visibility, and you get to set the combination via the Chrome Keyboard shortcut panel. However, to interact with the download manager, you need to rely on the mouse.

The best part is that you can see the downloads list without opening a new tab on each occasion, hence reducing the browser clutter and eliminating the need to go back and forth. The Download Plus panel provides details about each downloaded archive and detects media files on the page (you get the option to download them).

Within the Download Plus panel, you get to see the name of each downloaded file together with its link, transfer time, and size. You can copy the link to your clipboard, open the container folder in a Finder window, or directly delete the file from the drive.

Download Plus can also place a downloads bar in the bottom area of the Chrome window, integrates with the Notification Center to let you know when a transfer is complete and can add a counter badge to its icon.
