BaseFolder offers you the possibility to use your computer as a personal cloud storage solution. The files placed within the BaseFolder directory can be shared with others directly from your Mac, without having to upload them to a third-party data center.
The BaseFolder macOS application is intended to be a companion tool for the BaseFolder web service that anyone can access from virtually any device. To get started, you must register for a BaseFolder account, free of charge.
The app creates a folder on your Mac, and all the files placed in that directory will be automatically displayed in the BaseFolder web console, as soon as you log into your account. To share the files with others, you need to go through the web application.
Noteworthy is that the BaseFolder status bar menu only allows you to open the app's folder, unlink the account, or quit the utility. If you want to open the web console, you have to make due on your own.
Since BaseFolder does not copy the files to third-party servers, and the files are directly downloaded from your computer, sharing data using this service should be quite secure. Moreover, BaseFolder is also using encryption methods to protect the information.
The actual transfers can occur only when your Mac is online, but via the BaseFolder console, you can see the list of available files and share links even if the computer is shut down.
Optionally, you can choose to upload the files to the BaseFolder cloud servers to have them available at all times.
To sum up, BaseFolder enables you to convert your Mac storage into a personal cloud while also providing access to a third-party storage solution and make them accessible around the clock.
The drawback is that the BaseFolder macOS app does not allow you to share the file links directly: you must go through the web console in all cases. You cannot share the URL’s directly: each link has to be sent by email.
