BaconBar For Mac

BaconBar is a minimalist Reddit desktop client that resides in your status bar and offers you the possibility to view and open the latest posts from your subscriptions without interrupting your workflow for too long.

At the same time, BaconBar can also send notifications if you receive personal messages, so you can always stay connected, even if you are not actively browsing the social news website.

Right off the bat, you must provide your account’s credentials, and specify if you want to monitor the subscriptions or the subreddits list. Note that you cannot use the BaconBar app if you don’t have a Reddit account, but you can subscribe for one free of change.

BaconBar is a very unobtrusive solution for browsing the latest news in your Reddit account: the posts are displayed in the status bar menu, and you can choose to open the link in the browser, or jump to the comments section.

If the title of a post is too long, the BaconBar app displays the complete entry on mouse over. This way you can decide if a particular topic interests you or not before following the link. BaconBar also shows details about the source subreddit.

BaconBar comes with keyboard shortcuts for refreshing the entries list, or for loading the next batch of messages. Via the app’s Preferences, you can customize some of the default settings to match your needs.

You get to adjust the number of items included in the status bar list and the maximum number of characters. Moreover, you can set the filtering method (new or hot), and the PMs refresh period.

By default, BaconBar removes the visited links and reloads the list after a link is marked as visited, yet you can disable these functions and decide on your own when to load new entries.

To sum it all up, BaconBar provides an alternative solution for monitoring your Reddit account and sorting the posts that interest you without going through a browser.

However, you still need a web browser to actually read the messages, or to deal with any account management tasks.
