Creating icon files compatible with different operating systems can be a time consuming task without the proper tools. model2icon is a small Mac utility that allows you to quickly generate icons going from a 3D model.

Since the model2icon main window is very well organized you will find your way around the app quite easily. Press the “Load” button from the top right corner to import a .3ds or .md3 file and you will be able to preview the 3D model in the center of the window. You can use your mouse to move the model around or to zoom the image in or out.

On the right side of the model2icon main window you can preview the icons that will be generated, arranged by size: 16X16, 32X32, 48X48, 64X64, 128X128 and 256X256. Note that model2icon can create Mac OS X or Windows compatible icons or PNG files (you can select the output format from the top drop down menu).

The icon customization options are available on the left side of the main window. Via the Model transformation sliders you can change the object position while the “Show Shadow” panel allows you to adjust the outline direction, distance, opacity, blur and color.

Last but not least, the Mesh area displays the object name and enables you to quickly change its color via a minimalist color picker. When you are satisfied with the results, all you have to do is press the “Save” button and model2icon takes care of the rest.
