If you are using iPhoto for browsing a large number of photographs, you will most likely experience a decrease in performance as your library gets bigger and bigger, especially if you are adding high quality images.
iSlimPhoto is a small Mac OS X application that can help you generate a slimmer version of your iPhoto library for more efficient browsing, while keeping the original files intact.
Working with iSlimPhoto is fairly intuitive due to its no nonsense design: all functions are accessible from its main window and are organized by tabs. This way you can indicate the location of the source library, specify the output directory for the slimmed one and provide the image resolution for the target device.
Since your images are usually larger than your display, iPhoto is resizing them to match your current resolution each time you browse your collection. Unfortunately this takes a serious chunk out of your processing power.
iSlimPhoto allows you to have all the images included in your collection resized to your desktop’s resolution from the start: this way, iPhoto does not have to repeat the process and the browsing goes smoother.
The application allows you to specify the target resolution and adjust the quality of the processed image in the iSlimPhoto Image tab. For your convenience, you can view the the suitable devices for each resolution preset.
When you launch iPhoto keep down the Option key and the app will prompt you about which photo library you want to use. Note that iSlimPhoto will generate a slimmed library solely for transport and browsing purposes: the original images are preserved in a separate library.
iSlimPhoto is offering a simple solution for reducing the size of your iPhoto library: you can periodically resize your library to transfer the changes to other computers without having to deal with a large amount of information.
However, keeping the original iPhoto library is recommended, because iSlimPhoto is reducing the image resolution for the current display, which might prove insufficient for further editing.
