SVG (short for Scalable Vector Graphics) is a two-dimensional vector image format defined using XML text files, which makes it editable using both graphics and text editing utilities.
Because they use a text-based image format, you can compress SVG images with the help of various data compression algorithms or by removing the parts that are not needed for rendering.
SVG Cleaner is a free and open source cross-platform utility created to help you with the latter case of SVG compression mentioned above.
Moreover, SVG Cleaner is a user interface for the svgcleaner command line tool which enables you to shrink your SVGs effortlessly, but, unfortunately, lacks support for batch processing.
Besides significantly increased ease of use for beginners, the GUI-based SVG Cleaner adds batch file processing, SVGZ compression and decompression, as well as parallel cleaning jobs for considerably improved cleaning speeds.
To start using SVG Cleaner, you have to add the SVG files you need to clean via the top toolbar or by dragging and dropping them onto its main screen.
Before starting the cleaning process, you can choose what elements, attributes and paths SVG Cleaner sweeps and cleans via the Preferences window.
The next step is to click the Start button at the top of the window, and SVG Cleaner will start analyzing and reducing your SVGs' sizes by removing non-optimal elements which don't match the current SVG specification and duplicated items, as well as elements which will be invisible and unused during rendering.
SVG Cleaner will save the cleaned SVGs within the output folder you can set at the bottom of the main window, in the current working folder or overwrite the original files if you like to live dangerously.
All things considered, SVG Cleaner is the tool you want to have in your Mac's Applications folder if you work with SVG images frequently and you want to keep them as small as possible for faster rendering.
