There’s a lot you can do with Apple Photos, but it has its limitations. Efficiently managing large albums isn’t its forte, as it comes with a rather limited feature set.

Photos Workbench is designed to expand upon what Photos can do, while providing you with a very similar interface and workflow. It’s especially useful for renaming, geolocating, rating, and generally organizing images.

Photos Workbench looks very similar to Apple’s photo manager at first glance, and all the photos in your library will be loaded at launch. You can then start browsing through your library and albums, rate photos, and assign keywords.

A number of keywords can be made favorites, allowing them to appear as buttons in the UI. This makes it much easier to add them as you’re browsing your albums.

If you’re trying to find the best image for a specific purpose, it’s even possible to compare two photo side-by-side.

The app can use EXIF data and your own input to rename files so that they are easier to find and organize. For instance, you can use an image’s creation date, camera details, dimensions, or extension to rename it.

Any number of images can be processed, and you can even add counters or replace specific strings of text.

Whether you want to add location info or change it, Photos Workbench lets you achieve both tasks very easily. You can set a photo’s location by just dropping it onto a specific place on the map, and they move it around as needed.

Existing locations can be changed, and it’s even possible to use a GPX track file and have the application geolocate images automatically based on timestamps.

Photos Workbench can be considered an upgrade to Apple Photos, providing a few more features without becoming too confusing. It’s easy to work with and includes enough tools for most users to manage their photo albums.
