Important text can often be found in images, non-searchable PDF files, and websites that don’t allow you to select content from certain pages. In order to extract this kind of text, you can rely on apps that use optical character recognition.

OwlOCR is a versatile OCR app that lets you extract text from anywhere, supports multiple languages, and comes with a ton of other features. It is particularly well suited for batch processing operations, such as running text recognition on all the files in a selected folder.

The app is remarkably easy to use. If you want to grab text from your screen, simply press Cmd+F1 and select the capture area. Any detected text will be copied to the clipboard automatically, and you can paste it anywhere you like.

Alternatively, you can import an image or PDF file that you wish to process, grab multiple screenshots in quick succession, or scan barcodes and QR codes.  All these features can also be accessed from the menu bar.

Once some text has been detected, you can preview it in the main app window before pasting or exporting it. Any necessary modifications can be made here, and the app also has automated language correction.

Text captured from one or more locations can then be exported to a text or searchable PDF file.

If you go for the Pro version, you’ll get features that make it to extract text from multiple files in one go, use the app directly from Finder, and capture multiple concatenated screenshots. Post-processing tasks, such as replacing certain terms with others, can be set up and run automatically.

In short, OwlOCR is a great choice for all types of users. If you just need to extract some text every now and then, the free edition will suit you just fine. However, if you run text detection on large numbers of files regularly, the Pro edition can save you a lot of effort in the long run.
