HDR photos are all the rage, with even smartphones now able to take advantage of this photography technique. While a smartphone creates an HDR image instantly, photographers using DSLR cameras need to use software to get the final product.

ON1 HDR is one of the more intuitive apps for this purpose. It is capable of both combining images with different exposures and processing single RAW files, while including a bunch of editing tools to help you get the best end result.

Whether captured manually or using an automated process, you should have a set of images taken with different exposure settings. Simply load these to get started. You can select a preferred look, change ghosting settings, and even remove some images from the series.

Once you've gone through the import wizard, you will be able to fine-tune visual parameters, apply various presets and filters, crop the image, retouch it, and more. The app also supports batch processing for even quicker results.

While the output isn't going to be the same as true HDR, you can get pretty close with this method. ON1 HDR can drastically enhance individual images, but you have to make sure you capture them as RAW files.

Essentially, this method relies on processing the RAW image data in order to bring out shadows and highlights, and it does it all automatically. Of course, you can also fine-tune the result and apply additional filters.

Advanced images editors allow you to create HDR images, but they can be quite intimidating for newcomers, and often not the fastest method.
