Linear offers you the possibility to place multiple resizable rulers on top of your screen in order to streamline the development of your graphic projects. The utility comes with a status bar menulet, but also features system-wide hotkeys for most functions.
To start working with the Linear application you must create as many rulers as you need and use your mouse to resize them. You can achieve that by going through the associated status bar menu, or you can use the Control + Command + R global hotkey.
Similarly, you can toggle the visibility of the center guides (Command + ;) or choose to hide the rulers altogether (Control + Command + T). Within each ruler window, you get to see the width and height of the measured area and switch between the dark or light mode for the delimitators.
The Settings panel can be accessed only via the Linear menulet, but you need to navigate to the window to change the measurement unit. Linear provides support for working with pixels or em, which is great when dealing with CSS projects (you also get to set the base font value).
Besides actually measuring elements, Linear can also be used to check if the objects are aligned or centered. You can do that by creating duplicate rulers that can be moved around so you can compare the measurement of different sections, and so on.
Since all the Linear rulers are simply placed on top of your apps, the utility can work in conjunction with all sort of apps, ranging from graphic editors to web designing projects, or even when developing new utilities.
To sum up, Linear brings to your Mac’s desktop an unlimited number of rulers that work with PX or EM as measurement units, and can be resized, controlled, hidden, or closed with the same ease.
However, Linear does not feature any kind of customization option, so you can’t change the ruler’s opacity and color, or any of the default hotkeys.
