Mac users are fortunate enough to have a rather competent screenshot utility built into macOS. Nevertheless, there are always things that can be improved by third-party alternatives, and new features that can be implemented.
Flameshot is a quite popular open-source screenshot capture app that can be personalized in-depth and is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It’s powerful but easy to use, and it comes with cool features like instant Imgur capture for easy sharing.
There are two ways to grab content from your screen: capture a certain area, or the entire desktop. Sadly, unlike Apple’s screenshot tool, Flameshot cannot capture the contents of a specific window.
Other than that, the two apps work very similarly. You can set Flameshot to remember the last position and dimensions of the capture area, it can be activated with a hotkey, and images can be saved to the desktop with one key press.
Again, just like the built-in utility, this app lets you edit your screenshot before it is saved. There are lots of tools you can use, allowing you to draw, add shapes, write text, blur, and pixelize. A full edit history is saved, and you can go back to any step and make adjustments.
When everything is ready, you can save the image locally or upload it directly to Imgur. No additional configuration is required for this feature, and the URL will be copied to the clipboard so that it can be shared immediately.
The interface color, file naming format, and keyboard shortcuts can be customized freely, enabling you to mold the app to suit your workflow. The same goes for its behavior and optional features. You can get it to work almost exactly like the default macOS screenshot utility without too much effort.
Is Flameshot really necessary for macOS users, then? In most cases, no. It’s a very good app, but the tool Apple provides already does almost everything Flameshot can, with the added benefit of allowing you to capture application windows. It does lack instant Imgur uploads and this app’s level of customization, so it could still be a better choice for some users.
