It’s always annoying when you find a cool image on the web but its resolution is so small that you can’t really do anything with it. Unless you somehow find the original, your options are fairly limited, and one of them is an application like Bigger Picture.

This app essentially runs images through a processing engine that generates additional pixels, thus increasing their resolution. It is surprisingly easy to use, and it even supports batch processing.

Normally, if you increase an image’s resolution in a regular photo editor, the end result will be very blurry, as the existing pixels have simply been stretched out and no new data has been added.

Bigger Picture processes images a little differently. After you select the desired image size, it scans it and generates additional pixels based on the ones already in the picture. While the end result won’t be as accurate as the original high-resolution photo, it comes pretty close.

If the source image is noisy, which isn’t surprising when dealing with low-resolution JPEG files, you can also apply noise reduction.

To enlarge your image, you can either multiply its resolution but a certain amount, specify its exact dimensions in pixels or set the actual print resolution and dimensions or a printed version.

This isn’t the first app designed for this purpose, and it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table either. However, the fact that it is so intuitive makes it a great choice, though the price may be a bit steep when you consider that free alternatives are also available.

Suitable for both photos and artwork, Bigger Picture can be a handy tool for users who often work with low-resolution images. It is especially helpful if you need to process a lot of files as quickly as possible.
