Endless Sky is a 2D space exploration game that offers the player a significant degree of freedom, as you can choose to follow any number of paths to increase your standing, deepen your pockets or just explore the Universe.
It is not terribly complex, and only one of the three main storylines has been written, meaning that the game still has to go through extensive development until it can be considered complete.
As you would expect, you do not have too many funds to begin with, so you must choose your first ship carefully. There are many factors you need to take into consideration, such as cargo space, fuel capacity, weapon load and, of course, cost.
If you plan on making your fortune by buying cheap and selling high, you should probably look for a vessel that can carry a lot of stuff, but more weapons can keep you save when you run into pirates or other such shady characters.
Map navigation is very simple. Within a star system, you can use your regular thrusters to move around, explore planets or fight enemies. If you wish to move to another system however, you need to target it and engage your hyperdrive engine.
When you land on a populated planet, you can trade, look for work, loan money, upgrade your ship or hire new crew members.
You are provided with a brief description of each world, which serves to give you a better idea of the state of the Universe a thousand years into the future.
As far as graphics go, the galaxy map is well-designed, but in every other respect the game’s visual style is rather simplistic, which is something you should take into consideration if this factor is particularly important to you.
Sadly, the game’s soundtrack is non-existent, which is a real shame, as some well-chosen tracks would have helped create a much more immersive experience. The few included sound effects are quite simplistic and not particularly impressive.
Endless Sky is a simple game that could be fun for fans of sandbox-style space exploration games. However, it does not manage to create an immersive atmosphere and will probably not keep you entertained for very long, as the gameplay can become rather repetitive.
What's new in Endless Sky 0.10.6:
- The Gatling Turret and Javelin Turret now each require one crew member.
- The timer ship in "Sad Archie" has been given the "ramming" personality to improve its consistency.
- Animated ship and planet sprites are now correctly rendered in the hail panel instead of not being rendered at all or being rendered at a high frame rate.
- Gave the stock Dreadnought its fourth Torpedo Launcher back that it had lost in a previous release to make room for a bigger battery; it didn't need the bigger battery.
