Of all the low and high-tech strategy games that have been created and played throughout the years, chess has remained with us for centuries and is not likely to go away anytime soon.
Chess Online is a fairly simple app that enables you to play against friends or random opponents from around the world, and uses a player ranking system, along with monetary bets to make things more interesting.
When you first launch the game, you are given an initial ranking and enough funds to play a fair number of games. Each room uses a different bet amount, so make sure you are prepared to put your money on the line when joining one. You receive additional funds each day but can also top up your account from the in-game store.
You can also create your own room and define the time limit, bet amount and the maximum number of players, as well as specify whether or not it should be visible to all users.
Unfortunately, you cannot practice against computer-controlled opponents, though you can play against yourself to analyze and refine your tactics.
After joining a game, it is, for the most part, business as usual. Assuming you are familiar with chess, nothing will surprise you, so you can start playing competitively right away.
Each player’s stats are displayed on either side of the board, along with the timers. It is also possible to chat with your opponent during the game, assuming you are not too focused on planning your next move.
While Chess Online is not terribly disappointing from a visual standpoint, it does not exactly scream ‘eye-candy’ either. Moreover, no alternative board styles or chess pieces are available, which are included in many other similar games.
Overall, Chess Online is a fun game that allows you to play against online opponents and bet virtual money, but it less than impressive when it comes to its graphics.
