Employing complex applications to deal with small databases is not always the best solution. StatTools is a small Java application that can help you process statistical data by using basic, easy to use tools.

To get started, you must make sure that the Java Runtime is installed on your Mac beforehand. Navigate to the System Preferences pane, select the Java icon and, in its Options panel, make sure that the security level is set on medium.

This way, you will be prompted if you want to open the app instead of having it blocked automatically. Of course, you can easily revert the setting when you are done with StatTools (the security level is set on High by default).

Working with StatTools is fairly intuitive: in the main window you can input you data in a data sheet and then you can save the file to your disk. However, to help you find your way around the application, StatTools also provides a collection of demo datasets which can be used for testing purposes.

By processing the available information, StatTools is able to create various graphs: a histogram, a balancing histogram, a box plot, a scatter plot, a matrix plot, time series or normal plot. Each time you create a new diagram you must specify the column you want to use.

For each plot, you can click the information button to view general details about the data represented in the graph. You can easily send the chart to your printer if you want share the results with others (you cannot save them as files).
