Get rid of your writer's block with the help of the prewriting technique, via a minimalist OS X application that will keep you focused #Prewriting technique #Free writing technique #Writing exercise #Writing #Exercise #Prewriting
Freewriter is a writing application for Mac OS X designed to help you overcome blocks with the help of a classic exercise: you must keep writing for a set period of time, without stopping or focusing on grammar, spelling, or even logic.
The prewriting or free writing technique produces unusable material, but helps the subject overcome writer’s block and project the right state of mind to start working. In some cases, this can be a great way to collect initial ideas for a project.
Of course, the free writing exercise can be practiced by using any text editor, but the Freewriter app tries to make things more interesting. First off, the stylish user interface, together with the fullscreen support, aim to keep you focused during the entire process.
When you start writing, the line will be placed in the center of the window, and will remain there as long as you continue typing. If you stop, the line will drop to the bottom of the screen, and the text will be grayed out.
You can resume typing at any time during the five minutes period, but the pause time will reflect in your focus statistics. After the 5 minutes mark, Freewriter switches to the Revise Mode, where you can underline the parts you want to keep. You can also move the entire text to a third pary app by using the copy and paste functions.
To sum up, Freewriter is a great tool if you want to practice this writing exercise, but keep in mind that it should not be used to work on material you want to hold on to.
The Freewriter writing timer automatically resets once every 5 minutes, and you will lose the text once you press that “Continue writing” button. However, the underlined ideas are preserved inbetween writing sessions.
Moreover, the Freewriter proprietary file format saves only the revised ideas, and not the entire text content. To conclude, Freewriter should be used with caution if you want to keep the result of your writing exercises.
